Freelance Writing: Simple Tips on Complicated TopicsHow to Improve Your Writing Skills While You Sleep

Writing Skills Did you know you could get much more from your sleep hours? A recent study from the Northwestern University revealed that we can learn and develop skills while we sleep. And it means one important thing – we can boost our writing skills while we sleep, without making any effort at all.

3 Best Pre-Sleep Activities That Boost Writing Skills

Pre-sleep hours are the best time of the day to learn something new. The results of numerous studies show that the brain makes the most out of the information received right before falling asleep. (This is why watching horror movies before bed hours is a waste of resources.) Much better pre-sleep options for writers include (but are not limited to):

  1. Investigate a topic for tomorrow. If you already know your topic for tomorrow, you might start doing your research. In this way, you will boost your understanding of the topic and even wake up with a handful of brilliant ideas.
  2. Proofread some of your old writings. If you have an archive of your old writings, you may read some of them before going to bed – to laugh, indicate common errors and/or get some inspiration.
  3. Listen to an audio book. If your eyes are too tired to concentrate on something, you might listen to an audio book. Choose some quality books – motivating, inspiring and well-written to add more words to your active vocabulary and improve your sentence structures.

By the way, as you know, all these activities are rather monotonous, and you might even fall asleep in the middle of them. No problems with insomnia for sure.

Another important finding is that our hearing abilities remain active even while we sleep. Thus, listening to something useful at night or while taking a nap during a day, you might take your writing skills to a new level.

  1. Continue listening to the audio book. Though you might want to listen to the same part of the book again after you wake up, listening to it while you sleep will have positive effects on writing skills too.
  2. Take a nap whenever you feel that you can’t write. Sometimes you just can’t squeeze a single word from your keyboard. It may mean you need a good nap. Sure, this one is appropriate only when the deadline allows procrastinating for a while. A short nap (1.5 hrs is enough) could help you reactivate your brain and boost your productivity.
  3. Enhance your confidence. Sometimes lack of confidence is the top hurdle preventing us from doing more. That’s why trying to boost your confidence while you sleep can be a good idea. Before falling asleep, think of at least 3 of your small writing accomplishments during the previous day and silently praise yourself for them.

Do you believe it’s possible to improve your writing skills while you sleep? Have you ever tried any of the strategies discussed above?
