Start Writing
This one can seem too obvious. To complete some writing, one definitely has to start doing it first. However, it really can be a good advice on how to write more.
Here I mean quickly moving from research to writing. Start your draft before you get the complete picture of the problem. Meticulous planning and careful outlining are great. Yet, sometimes we just cannot afford them, due to a tight deadline.
Why not combine writing with research and discovery? Write down all brilliant ideas as soon as they cross your mind. Don’t even try to make them perfect at this stage. That’s what editing and proofreading are for.
Get Enough Night Sleep
I mean more than 3-4 hours per night. Although your personal amount of sleep may be different, 7 hours are what most people need at least. Being rested and feeling well is one more obvious but often overlooked answer to the question how to write more and calm down.
Go after the Inspiration with a Club
When you don’t know what to write, the worst strategy is to sit in front of the blank screen, waiting for inspiration to come. It is much better to do a bit of research, looking for the ingredients for a future paper. Sometimes you can get inspiration from where you least expect it. Sure, it’s better to read something relevant. On the other hand, sometimes distracting your attention from the main problem (for a while) can help too.
Use Transitions as Your Secret Weapon
On one hand, it seems that these words were invented to increase your word count. On the other hand, quality writing badly needs proper transitions between different thoughts. Coincidence? No. It’s fate.
Sure, including too many words without definite meaning would be unprofessional.
For example, the phrase “As it can be seen from the afore-mentioned studies and analyses, the conclusion concerning the question under consideration is that…” consists of 20 words, but it doesn’t bring any valuable information.
However, including relevant transition words is a good idea for writing more:
